X-38 Program Objectives and Requirements |

The initial demonstration of X-38 capabilities are divided into four phases. A brief
description of these phases and the planned objectives are listed below.
Phase 1 - A subscale X-24A shape launched from a Cessna aircraft at the
California City airport facility.
1. Evaluate the touchdown dynamics (including slideout) of the
subscale vehicle/parachute combination with 2.0 lb/ft2 parafoil loading. This
objective includes the effects of cross winds and lower flap settings.
2. Demonstrate flare capability.
3. Investigate the arrangement and positioning of parachute harness
mechanisms.
4. Measure preliminary stability and control of the subscale
vehicle/parachute combination.
5. Obtain photos and video recordings of vehicle flights.
